Margot Robbie has revealed she thought about quitting acting entirely after smash hit The Wolf of Wall Street after finding the instant attention difficult to cope with.

The actress, 32, had been acting since 2008 with a role in Neighbours as well as several smaller movie projects, but was shot into a new level of fame when the 2013 film came out.

Margot, who starred as Naomi Lapaglia opposite Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort, became a household name around the world after The Wolf Of Wall Street’s success, and soon found that the fame was not so easy to deal with.

She told Vanity Fair in a new interview: ‘Something was happening in those early stages and it was all pretty awful.

‘I remember saying to my mum, “I don’t think I want to do this.” And she just looked at me, completely straight-faced, and was like, “Darling, I think it’s too late not to.” That’s when I realised the only way was forward.’

Margot admitted that much of her reluctance to continue in the industry was down to the intrusiveness of the paparazzi on her life, which she has learned to deal with.

‘I know how to go through airports, and now I know who’s trying to f**k me over in what ways,’ she says.

‘If my mum dies in a car accident because you wanted a photo of me going in the grocery shop, or you knock my nephew off a bike — for what? For a photo? It’s dangerous but still weirdly nothing feels like it changes.’

Margot also clarified that the paparazzi photos of her ‘crying outside Cara Delevingne’s house’ were completely misconstrued, explaining that she was actually at a completely unrelated Airbnb and had something in her eye, making it look like she was crying.

The actress admitted that although she has found ways of coping with the attention, she is still a little uncomfortable with the spotlight.

She explained: ‘The way I try to explain this job—and this world—to people is that the highs are really high, and the lows are really, really low. And I guess if you’re lucky, it all balances out in the middle.’

The full feature with Margot Robbie is available in Vanity Fair now.
