Brendan Fraser has confirmed he will not attend the Golden Globes as to do so would make him a ‘hypocrite’.

The acclaimed actor made his long-awaited return to filmmaking this year with a starring role in The Whale, which has earned him multiple standing ovations at screenings across the world.

And while the movie, and Brendan himself, has been tipped for major awards including Oscars and Golden Globes, the Mummy star says he would not attend the Globes if invited.

It comes after the actor alleged that in 2003, he was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, at a luncheon.

No charges were ever brought to Berk, who had denied the allegations, and the HFPA continued on as normal after an internal investigation which said Berk had acted inappropriately but meant it as a ‘joke’.

Brendan had made the initial claim in a 2018 conversation with GQ Magazine, and is now on the front cover of the publication with a new interview surrounding the success of The Whale.

When asked by the outlet if he would attend the Golden Globes – which is run by the HFPA – if invited, Brendan was sure of his answer.

‘I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,’ he said.

‘No, I will not participate.’

He added: ‘It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that.’

Reflecting on the controversy around his sexual assault allegations, he said he ‘knew the HFPA[ would close ranks.’

‘I knew they would kick the can down the road. I knew they would get ahead of the story. I knew that I certainly had no future with that system as it was.’

Brendan’s newest venture, The Whale, sees him star as a reclusive English teacher who is battling with a compulsive eating disorder and trying to rebuild his relationship with estranged teenage daughter, Elle.

Co-starring Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink as Elle, Brendan was filmed being reduced to tears  by the film’s world premiere reception at the Venice Film Festival, where he and his co-stars were given a six-minute ovation.

He later became emotional as the film was subject to a similarly rapturous reception at the London Film Festival days later.
