After 11 series, the final episode of The Walking Dead is almost upon us.

It’s been an epic journey to reach this point with our group of survivors experiencing heartbreak, loss, and sometimes, hope to survive in a world full of the undead.

Given this is the show’s last outing, there are some who suspect that Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), the protagonist of the series until season nine, could make a cameo of sorts.

Fans are also hoping to see Black Panther star Danai Gurira back in action.

The comic book series on which the show is based, which ended in 2019, doesn’t offer any clues as it has been confirmed it will have a vastly different ending.

Here’s what we know so far.

Michonne left The Walking Dead during season 10, to search for Rick and hopefully discover his whereabouts after he mysteriously disappeared.

Rick last appeared in The Walking Dead in 2018 during the show’s ninth series.

He was last seen badly injured and being taken away in a helicopter by the Civic Republic Military – the police and military organisation.

However, there are plenty of encouraging signs that they could return for one last outing.

Fans have been speculating whether the characters will return (Picture: Albert L. Ortega / Getty Images)

In the case of Michonne, the first bit of evidence is a cryptic hint at a comic book-related plot point in the upcoming season, with a clip featuring a video of a cake rotating on a plate, followed by flashes of photographs of unnamed people.

Fans have turned to the comics for hints at where the storyline could go in the future. Viewers also realised that the cake in the shot drew back to a story arc in the source material featuring Michonne and her long-lost daughter Elodie, who she believed to be dead.

Another teaser also showed a courtroom, focusing on a gavel. Michonne became a judge in the comics, which led to further speculation that she could be returning.

In another big development, executive producer Scott Gimple confirmed that Michonne would be back at some point.

When asked by Collider if she will be returning in October last year, he responded: ‘Absolutely. You’ll be seeing Michonne, yeah. We’re going to be telling stories with Michonne again. The end of her on the series was, in many ways, the start of the story.’

As for Rick, back in February, Lincoln was spotted in Georgia with Norman Reedus during the show’s final weeks of filming.

In a photo shared to Instagram, Reedus and Lincoln can be seen posing outside the Nagomiya sushi restaurant in Midtown Atlanta, about an hour’s drive from The Walking Dead’s longtime home in Senoia, comicbook.com reported.

Asked about returning to The Walking Dead for its final season, Lincoln told SFX magazine he would not rule out the possibility.

‘I would never say never to that because everybody that’s still doing the TV show are dear friends, and it’s an extraordinary feat that they’re still going and making this beautiful and ground-breaking show that still resonates with the world,’ he said.

When is the Rick and Michonne spin-off series released?

The Walking Dead universe is far from over, with spin-offs featuring Daryl (Norman Reedus), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Rick and Michonne in development, much to the excitement of fans.

The latest trailer for the last installment of the original show has teased viewers with where the franchise will be heading next, giving a glimpse of Rick and Michonne reuniting.

The pair are seen talking to each other, as Rick says: ‘It’s been a while since we had one of these talks.’

Michonne is then shown as she says ‘Come on,’ before turning away from the camera. Whether she’s talking directly to Rick will be revealed next year.

The new series, described as an ‘epic and insane love story’ by Walking Dead producers, will air in 2023.

The final episode of The Walking Dead will be available on Disney Plus on Monday, November 20.
