Could Kanye West follow in Donald Trump’s footsteps and announce another run for US president?

The Gold Digger rapper has sparked huge backlash over the last few months due to his White Lives Matter T-shirt, and his anti-Semitic comments – leading to bans on social media and a string of brands distancing themselves professionally.

In a new podcast, Akon suggested that this is secretly a tactic for the fellow musician to drum up votes in a possible political run, following his previous unsuccessful attempt.

During an appearance on Club Shay Shay, talk turned to the dad-of-four’s latest controversies, when the Locked Up star said: ‘I think Kanye is smarter than y’all think. This is the brilliant side of him.

‘What is his next plan? To run for office, right? From our knowledge, his next plan is to run for office, right? Who was his main endorser? Trump.

‘In order for Kanye to even have a shot, he needs to have a piece of that base. This is how he’s getting it. And he knows this!

‘He knows he’s going to make a lotta Black people angry. But, guess what? We’re forgiving people. We are. He knows that, too.”

‘He’s got to plan the see-saw, but he’s got to be careful, because if there’s too much weight on one side, or not enough weight on the other side, he’s going to go down.’

Kanye famously ran for president in 2020, but eventually conceded his bid after winning just 50,000 votes.

Akon also insisted that he didn’t agree with any of the Grammy-winner’s latest comments, but vowed to always defend him.

‘I’m always defending the people that nobody wants to defend,’ he continued to Shannon Sharpe. ‘I’m going to always defend Kanye West because I always believe in life and opinion is just an opinion.

‘If Ye says something that I don’t agree with, I just don’t agree with it. But I’m not going to go jumping all mad and letting it affect my energy.

‘The last comments he made in these last days, I definitely don’t agree. There was a reason why the phrase Black Lives Matter was even created. It wasn’t just a concept for marketing, a gimmick, it was a history of behavior, hurt and pain and racism that led to that.’

‘I see maybe what he was trying to say, or what he was trying to do. Clearly everybody, we all believe that all lives matter. It has to matter for us to survive. It hasn’t mattered. All lives haven’t mattered,’ he added.

‘So, you can’t use your emphasis, or that phrase, onto a situation like this because it doesn’t fit here. This has to be resolved first before that happens. In order for all lives to matter, these lives have to matter.

‘Someone like Kanye, I think sometimes, in certain areas, he honestly forgets that his opinion doesn’t always matter. He thinks his opinion always matters. His opinion is just his opinion. As us listening to it, we’ve got to also know that too.’

It is not clear when Akon’s appearance was recorded, but the release comes just as former US president Trump confirmed his bid for the Republican nomination.

‘In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,’ he said from his Mar-a-Lago estate on Tuesday. ‘Unlike other presidents, I kept my promises.

‘Two years ago we were a great nation and soon we will be a great nation again,’ he added. ‘I will fight like no one has ever fought before.’

This will mark his third presidential campaign, after winning in 2016 and losing to Joe Biden in 2020.
