David Baddiel and Frank Skinner have given fans a first look at the revamped version of Three Lions, being released in time for the 2022 World Cup.

Three Lions was first released by Frank, David and Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie in 1986 as England battled it out in the World Cup in Mexico, and the men’s team still haven’t quite managed to ‘bring it home.’

Now, three decades later, a new version of the song is being released for the Qatar World Cup, which reflects the event taking place in December – and the fact the women’s team have succeeded in bringing football home.

David and Frank appeared on Thursday’s The One Show where they spoke about the new version of the song, which is both a football anthem and festive song, thanks to the 2022 tournament being held in the lead-up to Christmas.

‘We couldn’t resist the fact the World Cup was at Christmas,’ Frank said.

‘People said in the past that football songs are a little bit tacky, and of course Christmas songs are a little bit tacky.

‘And two negatives make a positive! So we put so much tacky in it, it’s going to be a classic.’

The track also draws inspiration from England’s Lionesses, who sensationally won the Women’s Euro tournament this summer.

And as David put it during his interview: ‘Well, football came home.’

He added, however: ‘We decided to give it one more go on the basis the blokes have not brought it home.’

Giving some insight into what to expect from the music video, David says it starts with them ‘getting really behind’ the Lionesses, ‘but then lamenting that the men are still there, trying away.’

Frank added the past summer was ‘the best I’ve ever seen an England team play, it was brilliant.’

The show then aired a first look at the song and its video, which features David and Frank in Christmas jumpers, singing: ‘The blokes seem cursed whenever they try and I think I know why, they’re just jinxed in July – but it’s December!’

‘Three lions on the sleigh, with she-lions’ inspiration,’ they sing as they hang baubles on the tree featuring the face of team captain Leah Williamson.

In a fun touch that shows just how long England have been waiting for a win, the video also sees David and Frank from the original video 26 years ago, sitting down with a cup of tea insisting that this will be the year.

Later in the interview, David confirmed that much of the crew who worked on the original video were also involved in the new Three Lions, including the director.

He joked: ‘We are not the same – if you look closely we look a bit older.’

‘It’s like those people’s grandparents have shown up!’ he said, referencing his and Frank’s younger selves in the video.

David added it was ‘nostalgic’ to remake the video, considering it was the same set and with the same people.

‘I find it quite moving. It’s football and Christmas, but it’s also how me and Frank Skinner have survived as a friendship over an incredibly long time.’

Frank added: ‘The first song was about a history of English football, and this one is about the history of English football plus the original song – because there’s our younger selves sitting on the sofa. Something most people wouldn’t want to be confronted by.’

Lightning Seeds frontman Ian also appears in the video, though as David pointed out, he retained the ‘rock star look’ rather than going for a goofy Christmas jumper.

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One
