Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo shared an emotional goodbye to fans after 19 seasons on our screens.

The 53-year-old has become a staple of the small screen thanks to her turn as Meredith Grey in the hospital drama, but drastically cut down on episodes for the current series.

Taking to Instagram, she thanked those who had watched her story unfold over nearly two decades.

Beside a snap of her posing by a neon sign, she began: ‘I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GREY and the show for 19 seasons!

‘Through it all….none of it …would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You all are RIDERS and you all have made the ride so fun and ICONIC!!

‘I love you madly and appreciate you right back. This isn’t your first time on the rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit.

‘With a lot of love and immense gratitude XoE.’

Fans and famous faces offered their support in the comments below, sharing their excitement for Ellen’s next steps.

Jodie Turner Smith replied: ‘Wowwwww my love what a ride! lots of love and profound curiosity for what comes next.’

‘19 incredible seasons of trailblazing. Looking forward to seeing what’s next for you as you transition,’ Dominick Thompson penned.

‘You were fantastic @ellenpompeo,’ a fan agreed. ‘We all related to Mer at one point or another in those 19 seasons. Have followed Mer from the start and loved it all for years.

‘Thank you for bringing that amazing character to life.’

‘I was in such deep denial that I still didn’t believe it but this makes it real,’ another posted.

‘So glad you are doing what’s right for you – to give 19 years of your life to something is HUGE!! You deserve this.’

An Instagram user added: ‘Oh man. I felt this deep. Thank you Ellen, thank you Meredith. I am the one that’s eternally grateful!’

The long-running medical drama began in 2005 and has followed the lives of those working at the iconic hospital ever since.

Before the current season hit our screens, it was announced that we would be seeing less of Meredith after Ellen limited her role – but she will continue on as executive producer, with her signature voiceovers still remaining for the remainder of the episodes.

In a recent instalment, Meredith confirmed that she would be leaving Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for a new job in Boston.

A teaser for an upcoming episode shows a farewell party thrown in her honor, as she says her final goodbyes.

Something tells us that we’ll be needing some tissues for that one…
