Keke Palmer has revealed she felt ‘trapped’ as a child actor on Nickelodeon.
The star, 29, made her acting debut in 2004 in comedy film Barbershop 2: Back in Business, but she broke into the mainstream thanks to her roles in Nickelodeon shows True Jackson VP and the Winx Club reboot.
Since then, she has gone on to appear in Scream Queens, Hustlers, and Jordan Peele’s Nope.
However, Palmer has recently opened up on the difficulties of being in the spotlight at such a young age, revealing one of her lowest moments during a seven-day Nickelodeon cruise.
‘I felt like I was walking around in a SpongeBob suit that I couldn’t take off,’ she told The Hollywood Reporter.
‘I was trapped. I couldn’t leave my room without someone coming up to me, calling me True Jackson. What you are, to everyone, is just a character… just part of their experience.’

True Jackson VP ran from 2008 to 2011, with Palmer playing the show’s titular character.
After the show ended, she renewed her contract with the network, doing voiceover work for Winx Club and starring in the Nick TV movie Rags.
In the same interview, Palmer spoke about how proud she is to come from her child actor roots to starring in Peele’s latest horror film.

Released this year, the film also stars Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun, and Brandon Perea.
‘People don’t realize what it took to even get to the point where I could play that part,’ she added.
‘Nobody would have seen me playing that role if it hadn’t been for all the things that I’d done prior, so I’m proud of it for more reasons than one.’
