Big Little Lies star Zoë Kravitz doesn’t think it’s likely that the third series of the show will happen, following the death of producer and director Jean-Marc Vallée.

The acclaimed filmmaker died suddenly last year aged 58.

His family later announced that his cause of death was due to ‘a fatal cardiac arrhythmia secondary to severe coronary atherosclerosis’ – which is when arteries become clogged with fatty substances called plaques, or atheroma.

The Oscar-nominated Canadian director was known for projects including Dallas Buyers Club, C.R.A.Z.Y., and Sharp Objects.

He also directed and acted as executive producer on the hit HBO show Big Little Lies starring Reese WitherspoonNicole KidmanShailene WoodleyLaura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz.

The second series of the hit show aired in 2019, though Kravitz, who plays Bonnie Howard Carlson, believes it is unlikely a third will ever hit our screens.

In an interview with GQ where she answered tweets from fans, Kravitz was asked when Big Little Lies would return – and we’re devastated by the answer.

‘I don’t think it is,’ she said. ‘We talked about doing a season three a lot and unfortunately, Jean-Marc Vallée, our incredible director, passed away this last year, which was heartbreaking.

‘And I just can’t imagine going on without him. He really was the visionary for that show. So, unfortunately, it’s done.’

Big Little Lies, which began in 2014 and is based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, was originally intended to be a miniseries.

However, following the success of its inaugural series, a second was commissioned which introduced Meryl Streep to the cast.

In 2019, HBO programming president Casey Bloys said he was open to the idea of a third series.

‘My sense having approached a season two sceptically, what became clear is that there was a story to tell about what happens (after series one), after a big lie like that,’ he said.

‘To me on the face of it, there’s no obvious place to go but this is an extraordinary group of actors and producers, and if they said “we have the greatest take”, I’d listen to them. I’d be open.’
