Adrian Chiles admits upping his water intake has ‘changed everything’ – and it’s not all positive.

The 55-year-old star always used to be ‘quietly proud’ of his ‘bladder control’ when he compared himself to friends of a similar age, but he soon realised he wasn’t drinking enough water.

‘Not for me the frequent, often urgent, toilet visits of my middle-aged friends. Motorway pitstops not for petrol, just for a pee? Not me,’ he wrote in The Guardian.

‘It turns out that while I’ve long started the day with a pint of water, apart from the odd tea or coffee that would be about it until teatime. Not any more.’

Now, after reading that a man his age and weight – 97kg (15st 4lb) – needs 3.7 litres (6.6 pints) of water each day, he’s upped his intake but noticed he’s constantly having to dash to the loo.

‘Hydration has changed everything for me, and not in a good way. Never mind the glowing skin – I want my life back,’ he quipped.

He explained: ‘I tend to go great guns until lunchtime then, thirst comprehensively slaked, I lose focus and the target seems to get further away. But the input side of things is less of a challenge than the, erm, output.

‘I’m forever running – and I mean running – to the toilet. And anything I do that involves putting any distance between me and a toilet needs careful planning.’

Adrian admitted he has no idea how people who actually stick to their recommended water intake manage to go about their daily lives without the same struggle.

‘It’s a mystery to me. I’d like to know the hydration levels of the highly successful, the super-busy. I bet they’re as low as reservoirs in August,’ he said.

When it comes to Adrian’s bathroom habits, the presenter recently opened up about his decision to actually install a urinal in his own home – something he’s ‘very proud’ of.

‘This is an enthusiasm shared by very few people, especially women, who have been known to retch at the very sight of it,’ he admitted, noting he is ‘baffled’ by people who don’t see the joy.

‘[It’s] a receptacle at the correct height for ease of use, which is neat, tidy, clean and flushable,’ he said. ‘Gentlemen – or anyone with a penis – trust me: it is wonderful to have a toilet of one’s own.’
