Well, it’s finally happened. The actor Brian Cox and the professor Brian Cox have finally been united in the same room, on the same show and even on the same sofa for BBC Breakfast.

And it was a joy.

The two Brian Coxes are both national heroes in two completely different fields but held in the same affection and esteem.

And speaking to host Charlie Stayt, the pair giggled as they revealed that their identical names can lead to some awkward mishaps, including a mix-up at a hotel the night before.

Actor Brian revealed professor Brian was almost going to have to bunk up with him in the same room.

‘Last night was very confusingwhen he arrived to the hotel and said there was two Brian Coxes so they said you’ve got two rooms,’ said the Succession star.

He said, no I think there’s two Brian Coxs and the hotel said we can’t have two Brian Coxes’

‘They wouldn’t check me in! I had to change my name,’ exclaimed professor Brian.

‘I had to get a picture out on my phone and say, “this Brian Cox, he’ll be coming later” and he said, “I know neither of you – I don’t watch television.”‘

Professor Brian even thought he might have ended up creeping into the Hollywood star’s room in the middle of the night, joking: ’It might have happened because he was going to cancel – I had that in my mind!’

Even when they’re not attending the same event or hotel though, there’s still mayhem.

‘Sometimes I’ll get in a car and the driver will say, “Ah I love Succession, I don’t like this astronomy stuff”,’ explained the physicist, while the other Brian said people often expect to meet the professor too instead of him.

And that’s what happened when actor Brian Cox met Professor Brian Cox.

What a ride.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
