Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first person in the world to notch up 500 million followers on Instagram.

The Portuguese footballer, 37, has recently caused controversy both in England and in his native country of Portugal after an interview with Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo was critical of his club, Manchester United, during the interview, and appeared to receive a frosty reception from a couple of his Portugal teammates at the World Cup.

However, that hasn’t stopped him pulling in the fans as he reached the mega milestone on Instagram which sees him followed by half a billion people.

It’s been rumoured that United is planning to set a deadline in their attempts to resolve the matter of Ronaldo’s future at the club.

Ronaldo took to Instagram last week to post a defiant message after the interview with Morgan, in which he said he would ‘never respect’ manager Erik ten Hag caused uproar

The superstar athlete joined Instagram in October 2012 and has posted over 3,000 photos to the image-sharing social media site.

Morgan, 57, whose interview with Ronaldo appears to have taken the former Real Madrid man over the 500 million mark, congratulated him.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first person to reach 500m followers on Instagram, 124m more than his nearest rival in 2nd place… Lionel Messi. Congrats, Cristiano.’

Ronaldo and Messi, who have won 12 Ballon d’Or awards between them, are two of three sports stars among the top 10 most-followed Instagram accounts.

Former pro-wrestler Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is fifth, with 348 million followers, while Selena Gomez and Kylie Jenner take third and fourth respectively.

Back in England, United has reportedly instructed Ronaldo not to return to the club’s training ground in south Manchester after the World Cup.
