Halloween actor James Winburn, best known for wearing the Michael Myers mask in the movie’s iconic final sequences, has died at the age of 85.

The actor’s manager told TMZ that he died in a hospital in Los Angeles on Saturday after a short illness.

Winburn is best known for doubling for Nick Castle’s Michael Myers in the 1079 film Halloween.

He wore the mask in the iconic final scenes, when Dr Loomis shot him six times, pushing him over the edge of the balcony.

He returned to the role for Halloween II, and has also has hundreds of stunt credits under his belt including The Fog, Escape From New York, and Tron.

Winburn also directed films including Miami Beach Cops, The Death Merchant, and Evil Altar.

The stuntman was recently active, making a trip to Manchester for the For The Love of Horror convention last month.

They shared a tribute on Twitter reading: ‘We are extremely sad to learn of the passing of James Winburn, who joined us for #ForTheLoveofHorror last month.

‘James was an absolute pleasure to work and shared some amazing stories with everyone over the weekend. Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.’

He was also due to attend the Monster-Mania convention in Pennsylvania this month.

The organiser of the event said on Facebook: ‘James was always appreciative of the Halloween fans and truly enjoyed meeting everyone. Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.’
