Sir Elton John is inching further down the yellow brick road with the music legend performing his final show in Los Angeles last night and, understandably, it was an emotional affair.

The Rocketman hitmaker is in the throes of his incredibly lengthy Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which is seeing him perform in every corner of the planet before officially retiring from live performing.

Spanning a total of five years, Sir Elton will have performed across Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand by the time the mammoth tour wraps up in 2023.

On Sunday, it was California’s turn to give the musician a warm send-off, with Sir Elton closing a set of three shows at Los Angeles’ Dodgers Stadium.

‘Tonight is a very special night. We are creating history tonight, with the first ever global livestream. I’m so glad to see you, Dodger Stadium,’ Sir Elton told the packed-out crowd at the 56,000-seat arena.

He later added that ‘without America, I wouldn’t be here’.

The night saw Sir Elton, 75, perform a host of his classic hits including Rocketman, I’m Still Standing, Candle In The Wind and Tiny Dancer.

At one point, he dedicated his track Border Song to the ‘lasting genius and legacy’ of the late Aretha Franklin, explaining how the Motown legend’s cover of the track helped launch his career in America.

He described meeting and performing with Franklin, including a show shortly before the singer died in 2018.

‘It was a surreal experience to be in the company of genius,’ he said, adding: ‘Tonight is a very special night for me, a very emotional night for me, it’s been a long journey.’

Sir Elton was joined on-stage by his close friend and collaborator Dua Lipa, with the two belting out their recent collaboration Cold Heart.

Other guests to join the British superstar on-stage were Brandi Carlile, who sang Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me with him, and Kiki Dee who performed their duet Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.

Sir Elton ended the main set with hit track Saturday Night’s Alright, which concluded with fireworks and confetti cannons.

After thanking crew members and bringing his longtime collaborator and friend Bernie Taupin on-stage to share the applause, Sir Elton explained that he was bringing his touring to a close to spend more time with his family.

‘I wish you love and prosperity,’ he said before beginning Goodbye Yellow Brick Road as his final number.

Sir Elton received a huge turn out with celebrities such as Heidi Klum and Dita Von Teese among the A-listers filling the audience.

With his LA shows concluded, Sir Elton will next visit Australia and New Zealand before embarking on European tour dates.

The run will end with two special concerts at Vicarage Road, the home of Watford Football Club of which Sir Elton became chairman in 1976, on July 3 and 4, 2023.
