Ulrika Jonsson admits she struggles with ageing and can be very critical of her own looks.

The 55-year-old star doesn’t like seeing herself in the mirror because when he catches her reflected she finds it difficult not to ‘pull everything about [herself] apart’, which she thinks might be to do with growing older.

‘I admit, I do it daily. I try to avoid mirrors for that very reason because I will look into them and pull everything about me apart,’ she wrote for The Sun. ‘I’m wondering if it’s an age thing.

‘Goes without saying that the ageing process is not as fun as you hope. Or as gracious and forgiving as you think it will be when you’re in your twenties.’

She insisted when she was younger, she found it easier to overcome any insecurities she had about her looks, but she’s finding it tougher to deal with in her 50s.

‘In my youth I might have been displeased by the size of my snout but I always knew a bit of blusher on my cheek made the world a better place,’ she added.

‘Fast forward to my fifties and “putting my face on” takes an hour. All I see is how my face is collapsing and diminishing – except for the hairs on my chinny, chin, chin. There’s plenty of them.’

The former Gladiators host admitted hearing Michelle Obama discuss similar insecurities helps people realise they’re not alone in that, but it doesn’t make it easier to be kinder to herself.

‘I guess it’s encouraging to hear that a beautiful, intelligent woman like Michelle has the same aesthetic struggles as the rest of us. It makes me feel like we’re in it together,’ she said.

‘But it doesn’t change the fact that no amount of telling myself I look all right will make me believe I do.’

In Michelle’s new memoir The Light We Carry, the former First Lady admits she has lived her her ‘fearful mind’ for 58 years, noting that there are ‘plenty of mornings’ where she’ll turn on the bathroom light, catch sight of herself in the mirror and ‘desperately’ want to ‘flip it off again’.
