Geri Horner has made Spice Girls fans proud by receiving an honorary doctorate degree.

To paraphrase the immortal words of a certain iconic girl group, never give up on the good times – or your education.

The singer, now known as Dr Halliwell-Horner, has become the first Spice Girl to receive the honour, donning her robes at Sheffield Hallam University’s graduation ceremony on Tuesday.

Ginger Spice told students: ‘I think Sheffield Hallam University is an amazing place. It’s incredibly diverse and inclusive.

‘When they offered me this honorary doctorate, I was truly honoured and grateful. I love learning, so it feels fantastic to be here.’

She added: ‘I sincerely believe education is a superpower – we are learning machines and I am still learning.

‘I’ve learnt that students here at Sheffield Hallam graduate with more than a degree, but with a passion, a focus and a vision for life.’

She told those about to graduate that she did not go university but loved studying English literature at A-level ‘before I embarked on a different kind of adventure.’

Geri continued: ‘But I always valued my education and my love of reading, storytelling and words. I always had my education to lean on. Education is power.’

The university granted the degree in honour of Geri’s commitment to raising the aspirations of children and young people, advocating for women’s rights and an outstanding contribution to the music industry over the last 25 years.

Geri also posed for photos in her robes and on stage as she celebrated the honour.

The star has had plenty of reason to celebrate recently, with most of the Spice Girls reuniting for her delayed 50th birthday bash this month.

Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, and Melanie C all rocked up and delighted fans by belting out some classics, with the stars also sending sweet messages to Mel B, who couldn’t make it.

Meanwhile, Geri also landed a role in Sony’s upcoming Gran Turismo movie, making return to the silver screen after her debut in 1997’s Spice World.

It’s clearly got a lot to live up to!
