Warning: spoilers ahead for the Andor episode 12 finale.

It’s safe to say the Andor season finale has left us an absolute wreck, with episode 12 signalling the moment Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) appeared to officially join the Rebel Alliance.

As was expected, the conclusion of the epic tale on Disney Plus made for powerful viewing, with Cassian’s adoptive mother Maarva (Fiona Shaw) using her own funeral to speak to the people of Ferrix from beyond the grave, urging them to fight with every ounce of their being against the ‘disease’ of the Empire.

In the final moments of the episode, Cassian confronted Luthen (Stellan Skarsgård), who’d planned on having the protagonist killed… before an ominous post-credits scene pointed towards further tragedy to come.

The post-credits scene not only has massive implications for Cassian’s personal story, but for the entire trajectory of the Star Wars franchise from the very beginning.

What does the Andor finale post-credits scene mean? Ending explained

The end of Andor episode 12 confirmed what many fans will have undoubtedly suspected all along, in a moment that tied directly into the events of Rogue One.

Fans may be upset not to have learnt the fate of Kino Loy (Andy Serkis) in the finale (Picture: Lucasfilm Ltd.)

When Cassian was imprisoned at Narkina 5, he and the other inmates were being forced to do manual labour, creating mechanical parts without a single clue as to what they were helping to build.

A number of viewers guessed that they were likely putting together parts for the Death Star, the terrifying space station first weaponised by Darth Vader on screen in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, the 1977 film that kicked off the original trilogy.

The Death Star has since been seen on multiple occasions, and played a significant role in Rogue One, as the Rebel Alliance embark on a vital mission to steal the plans for the weapon, before managing to transfer the plans into the hands of the one and only Princess Leia.

#StarWars fans, what do we collectively think they were building in #Andor ?

In the post-credits scene, it looks as though one of the very pieces that Cassian and his fellow prisoners pieced together is being placed onto the Death Star by robotic machinery, as the fearsome weapon with the ability to destroy entire planets inches closer to being completed.

The visual of the Death Star also seemed to mirror the Andor symbol that’s in the logo and is shown at the start of every episode.

In Rogue One, Cassian meets Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), whose father Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), is a talented scientist forced by the Empire to help finalise the creation of the Death Star.

The Rebel Alliance set out on a mission to get their hands on the Death Star plans, with Galen revealing to his daughter in a recorded message that he secretly built a vulnerability within the weapon, which eventually enables Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to destroy it once and for all.

I’ve been surprised by the lack of people who don’t get the Rogue One Death Star eclipse reference in the Andor series title sequence.

Will there be a season 2 of Andor?

It’s already been confirmed that Andor will be back for more episodes after the first 12 – but the show’s ending also appears to already be set in stone.

Showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed that after the first outing, season two will continue to follow Cassian’s journey all the way up to Rogue One.

So, unless the creators of the show change their mind, it appears as though we’re looking at two seasons in total, consisting of 24 episodes in total, before the series draws to a close.

‘I have two more years to go. We start shooting in November on Part 2. And I don’t know if… Our past pattern was two years, but I mean, I’ll be on… We’ll shoot from November to August,’ he told TheWrap, insinuating that the second season could have a release date in 2024.

Andor is available to watch on Disney Plus.
