It’s safe to say that Andor has been an absolute whirlwind ever since the Star Wars prequel show debuted on Disney Plus.

Today, the epic series concludes with the season finale, having taken viewers on an unforgettable journey following the origin story of the one and only Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) for 12 episodes.

As far as the timeline goes, fans know that the beginning of the drama is set five years before the events of the 2016 film Rogue One, which was the first time Diego made an appearance as the character.

The show will follow Cassian’s story all the way up to the events of the movie, which saw him cross paths with Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a woman who ends up in cahoots with the Rebel Alliance years after her father Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) is forced to help the Empire with his scientific expertise.

So will Andor be back for a second season? Here’s what we know.

Has Andor been renewed for season 2?

Yes, after the season finale of Andor ends today, the show will eventually return with a second season. So you can let out that sigh of relief.

Tony Gilroy, the showrunner for Andor who also co-wrote the script for Rogue One, recently revealed that filming for the second instalment – which has only just begun – is expected to conclude next summer.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, he outlined how the second season would differ from the first, explaining how the first 12 episodes were ‘really about him becoming’.

‘I’m hoping what we’re gonna do in the second half will make the meal feel really satisfying. Because the first year is really about him becoming, and the last line of this tranche of 12 episodes will sum up where we’ve been trying to get to. And we come back a year later. It’ll be very different,’ he said.

Tony continued: ‘The next four years [of story] are not about becoming a revolutionary. They’re about learning to be a leader and how difficult it is to put the alliance together and what happens to people who are the original gangsters versus the establishment and a lot of different other issues.’

When is season 2 of Andor expected to come out?

During a conversation with TheWrap, Tony suggested that season two of Andor may not land on our screens until at least 2024, when he described the time frame in which he’s working on the project.

‘As suspect as my involvement in the community is, by the time I’m done, I’ll have had my hands on 26 hours of ‘Star Wars’ content. I will be a player by the time we finish. This is me sticking around right now. I think that’s the headline,’ he said.

‘I have two more years to go. We start shooting in November on Part 2. And I don’t know if… Our past pattern was two years, but I mean, I’ll be on… We’ll shoot from November to August. And then our post[-production] last time was about a year,’ he added, implying that 2024 may end up being the approximate release date.

However, there’ll be several Star Wars productions to look forward to in the meantime, including The Mandalorian season three, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. So we have a feeling that time will speed by!

Andor is available to watch on Disney Plus.
