It probably won’t come as a surprise but Spice Girls star Mel C has revealed she would turn down an offer to perform at the Qatar World Cup to stand with the LGBTQ+ community.

This year’s World Cup has been heavily scrutinised over its host nation Qatar’s human rights issues, which include the laws against being gay in the country and a staggering number of local workers who have reportedly died while constructing stadiums for the global sporting event.

On Sunday, the opening ceremony boasted little star power with BTS singer Jungkook and Hollywood legend Morgan Freeman the only A-list celebrities taking part.

Mel C, 48, has now weighed in on the controversy and admitted she wouldn’t even consider getting involved in the event.

‘Personally, I’m an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and it’s not something I would feel comfortable in doing,’ she said.

‘People want to go over there and help to make a change. Each to their own, but it would be a no from me if the offer came,’ the singer added to the Daily Mail

Coincidentally, Mel C’s former bandmate Victoria Beckham’s husband David is an official ambassador for Qatar Tourism during the World Cup and has controversially been paid a reported £10million.

His support of the country has been heavily criticised with many pointing out David has friends within the LGBTQ+ community, such as Sir Elton John.

Comedian Joe Lycett publicly called on David to step down from his role as an ambassador and threatened to shred £10,000 if the former footballer didn’t.

When the deadline passed on Sunday with David still an ambassador, Joe shared a video of him appearing to throw wads of cash in a large shredder. However, he later revealed it to be actually be David’s 2002 Attitude magazine cover rather than £10k.

David has not publicly addressed the criticism of his lucrative role but has been seen attending several football games in Qatar since the tournament kicked off last weekend.
