As any Australian knows, there is a very specific way to eat Vegemite, but Eva Mendes has become the latest person to fall victim to the spread.
The American actress has recently been living Down Under with her family while husband Ryan Gosling films his movie The Fall Guy in Sydney.
While they’ve already settled in quite comfortably and have been seen out and about enjoying the sights, it might have been too soon for Eva to try out one of the iconic national foods.
Mainly because it seems no-one told her how it’s actually eaten.
Posting a video to Instagram, Eva was ready and willing to try it, despite her obvious nerves.
‘I was told I had to try Vegemite and I had to film myself and that makes me a little nervous,’ she said to the camera.

Like Selena Gomez and Jimmy Fallon before her, Eva dug into the spread straight from the jar and, knowing what was about to happen, it was pretty painful to watch.
‘It looks like a jam,’ she said as she dipped her finger in and took a taste.
She instantly recoiled and covered her face with her hand, looking like she was about to be sick.
‘Wow, it clings to your mouth and it hangs out,’ she said.
Quickly grabbing a piece of trusty Dairy Milk, she said: ‘Thank God for chocolate’.

‘It’s in the back of my throat,’ she added.
She isn’t the first (and likely won’t be the last) person to fall victim to eating Vegemite the wrong way.
As a PSA for those who are yet to try, do not even think about putting a spoon straight into the jar.
Instead, enjoying this yeast spread is best done with a piece of toast that is covered in butter.
It is only then that you spread the tiniest amount on, and voila, you might understand the appeal.

In 2021 Selena, tried the spread on her cooking show and couldn’t cope with it, saying: ‘I’m so sorry Australia, I love you guys so much’, as she tried to cleanse her mouth.
But perhaps the best ever reaction was when One Direction were given some to try on an Australian talk show back in 2012 and Niall Horan spat his out live on breakfast TV.
Other celebrities like Rita Ora and Miley Cyrus appear to be fans, though, with Rita tasting it on an episode of The Voice Australia and simply saying it was ‘a bit sour’, while Miley Cyrus actually has a jar of the stuff tattooed on her body.
Meanwhile, Eva might be having the ultimate Aussie experience after she said this week that she had an encounter with the wildlife.
When settling in for the night last week, Eva said that she and Ryan discovered a Huntsman spider in their bed.
