A Place In The Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin has been applauded for his bravery by Good Morning Britain viewers after discussing his terminal cancer diagnosis.

The 49-year-old television star, who is a familiar face on the Channel 4 show as well as the BBC’s Escape To The Country, revealed earlier this month that his lung cancer has spread to his brain and has six months to live.

Joining Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard on Thursday’s programme, Jonnie revealed that he has no current plans to disclose his illness to his three young children whom he shares with his wife Jessica.

‘It’s only been recently that I’ve considered when we’re going to tell them,’ he shared.

‘At the moment, I’m me and I don’t think there’s any need to tell them. Why would they need to know? For now, let the good times roll for as long as possible.’

Jonnie is father to son, Rex, three, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac.

‘I try my best to put my head in the sand as much as possible because what’s the point spending your days thinking about cancer,’ he added.

Jonnie also talked about being let go from A Place In The Sun after the show’s bosses claimed they couldn’t find adequate insurance to cover his trips abroad.

‘I feel massively aggrieved,’ he told the hosts. ‘I could work in this country. I can travel away from home for three to four days. It just broke my heart. I just didn’t think they fought for me.’

Channel 4 and Freeform said they were ‘unable to secure adequate insurance cover’ for him to continue international filming amid the Covid crisis.

Their joint statement read: ‘No stone was left unturned in trying to enable Jonnie to continue his international filming with us during Covid but the production company were unable to secure adequate insurance cover for him.

‘We, of course, understand how frustrating this must be for him at this incredibly difficult time.’

Good Morning Britain viewers were bowled over by Jonnie’s interview and showered him with praise.

‘How incredibly brave is Johnny Irwin, praying for a miracle for him and his beautiful family,’ wrote one.
