O Yeong-su, who played Oh Il-nam in the Netflix hit drama Squid Game, has been indicted on charges of sexual misconduct, it’s been reported.

Last year, the South Korean actor gained worldwide fame for playing the role of 001, an elderly man participating in the deadly game in an effort to win a fortune, a role for which he won a Golden Globe Award.

It’s been claimed that the 78-year-old has been accused of touching a woman inappropriately in 2017, with a complaint filed in December last year.

According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the English edition of the South Korean national daily newspaper JoongAng Ilbo, Yeong-su has denied the charges.

It was reported that the case was closed in April this year with no files being charged at the time.

However, after the woman appealed the verdict, the case has been reopened, with the Suwon District Prosecutors Office’s Seongnam branch indicting the actor without detention on Thursday.

South Korean TV network JTBC claimed that Yeong-su addressed the incident in question by explaining how he ‘held hands with the woman to show the way around a lake’.

He’s said to have issued an apology to the complainant, but added that this did not constitute him admitting he was guilty.

In the early 1960s, Yeong-su first started acting in a theatre company, going on to star in productions including A Streetcar Named Desire, The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest.

His film credits include A Little Monk and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring, while on TV, he’s starred in productions including Queen Seondeok and God of War.

Among the accolades he’s received throughout his career, Yeong-su has been the recipient of a Dong-A Theatre Award, a Baeksang Arts Award and the National Theatre Association of Korea recognition for best actor.

He became the first South Korean performer to win a Golden Globe for his performance in Squid Game, which is set to return for a second season.
