Jamie Redknapp has revealed he’s undergone knee replacement surgery after experiencing a ‘constant battle’ with his joint for over 30 years.

In a post shared on Instagram with a picture of himself lying on a hospital bed, the former professional footballer explained that when he was 18 years old, he had all of the meniscus removed from the inside of his right knee.

This meant that it was ‘bone on bone’, as the removal of the meniscus took away ‘the cushion that protects it’.

‘It has given me constant problems since,’ the 49-year-old said, having first started playing professional football in his late teens, before going on to play for teams including Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and England.

The pundit, who retired from the game in 2005 when he was 31 years old, was plagued by injuries throughout his career, explaining in his Instagram caption that he ‘had to have physio appointments at all hours’.

‘With the help of the incredible Kevin Lidlow it was a constant battle to keep the swelling down and pain under control, but after at least 12 surgeries I have decided to have it done,’ he said.

Jamie recalled how when he was 27 years old, he was ‘lucky enough to meet an amazing surgeon called Richard Steadman’.

‘He managed to give me a few more years of my career, before I had to retire from the game I love at 30,’ he stated.

Referencing his wife Frida Andersson giving birth to a baby last year, he added: ‘Having a young baby has also made this decision easier, as I need to be as mobile as possible so I can chase that little speedy rascal around.’

Jamie issued a message of thanks to a doctor named Dr Sweetnam and the medical professional’s team ‘for looking after me so amazingly well’.

He also shared a picture of his X-ray on Instagram, telling his followers: ‘As you can see on pic 2 I assume I will be setting off the X-ray machines at the airport with my new titanium knee .

‘So here is to a new beginning, I’m excited for this next chapter 👏 👏 And watching all the World Cup games is going to make this rehab a touch easier. ⚽.’

Several people sent Jamie well-wishes and messages of support, including McFly musician Danny Jones, who commented: ‘Speedy recovery mate! We are in recovery together just had my ACL reconstruction.’

‘Good luck mate,’ added fitness coach Joe Wicks, while actor Jamie Dornan wrote: ’Hope it heals up fast son! Will only improve your golf game!’
