Ricky Gervais has weighed in on The Office UK vs USA debate, after the highly anticipated World Cup match.

Despite their incredible 6-2 victory over Iran earlier this week, England were handed a World Cup reality check by USA on Friday night.

The Three Lions failed to replicate that performance against the American side, as the game ended with a 0-0 draw.

Ahead of the match, tension had been building from viewers on both sides of the pond, with threats that the losers could keep marmite celebrities and topics… including James Corden.

The Office was also thrown into the mix, with social media users suggesting that whoever wins can bin the other version of the sitcom.

Adding his voice in, Gervais, who created both versions, said: ‘Aghhh! Will they erase the best one or the one that makes me the most money?’

He had been replying to a tweet which read: ‘The winner of England vs USA gets to erase the other version of The Office.’

People were pretty divided in the comments, with one writing: ‘Changing my tune and cheering for England now,’ while another penned: ‘USA Better Win! Michael Scott is a gem.’

While Gervais’ comment may have sounded pretty cryptic, it’s clear which versions he was referring to.

More than 20 years ago, Gervais wrote and starred in the original series, introducing us to the truly outrageous David Brent.

Steve Carell took on the role of his equally ridiculous counterpart, Michael Scott, in the US version shortly after, with a heated conversation about which one is better raging on ever since.

While he played the original Gervais, the UK version only managed 14 episodes, whereas the American version delivered 201.
