Helena Bonham Carter has spoken out in defence of her longtime friend Johnny Depp following his libel trial against Amber Heard, and believes he’ll be ‘totally fine’ in Hollywood now.

Depp’s acting career was thrown into jeopardy as his legal battle with Heard rumbled on. The apparent cost to his career has included losing his iconic role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but he has managed to hold onto a lucrative deal as the face of Dior’s Sauvage fragrance for men.

Since winning his libel trial against ex-wife Heard, 36, who he sued for defamation over an article she wrote about domestic abuse, Depp, 59, has slowly begun to pick up the pieces of his career and has been busy on a music tour while also filming for indie film Jeanne du Barry.

He most recently made a cameo in Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty fashion show.

Now, his good friend and Alice In Wonderland actress Helena, 56, has shared her thoughts on whether Depp and other ‘disgraced’ stars can find their way back to Hollywood.

‘I don’t think there is for someone like Kevin Spacey. And Johnny certainly went through it,’ Helena told the Sunday Times Magazine

She added: ‘Oh, I think [Johnny] is completely vindicated. I think he’s fine now. Totally fine.

‘My view is that [Heard] got on that pendulum. That’s the problem with these things — that people will jump on the bandwagon because it’s the trend and to be the poster girl for it.’

Depp and Helena have been friends for decades having worked together on several films over the course of their careers, including Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride and Alice In Wonderland.

Depp filed a lawsuit against Heard over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she detailed her experience with domestic abuse. The article did not mention Depp but his legal team argued that it was suggestive he was physically and emotionally abusive towards the Aquaman actress during their marriage, which ended in 2017.

The Edward Scissorhands actor was awarded $10million in compensatory damages, and a further $5m in punitive damages.

Heard won one of her three defamation countersuit claims against Depp, and was awarded $2.

Despite receiving trolling and abuse during the trial on social media, Heard has been supported by feminist groups and revered writer Gloria Steinem.
