Aside from being a runaway sales success, Elden Ring boasts 6 billion views on TikTok, which is more than most of its competitors combined.

It thoroughly deserves all its success but the most unexpected video game hit of this year, perhaps of this decade, is Elden Ring. The ultra hard follow-up to Dark Souls is one of the top 10 best-selling games ever in the US and bound to dominate game of the year lists over the new year period.

Recently, the general public voted Elden Ring as the Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joysticks, with it and developer FromSoftware taking home five awards in total.

Now its fans can also brag that it’s the most popular game to be featured on social media in 2022, especially on TikTok where Elden Ring related videos garnered a whopping 6 billion views in total.

No other game to have launched this year has come even close to that number, with silver medallist Dying Light 2 Stay Human accruing 719,700,000 TikTok views. That’s a lot but merely a tenth of Elden Ring’s total.

Dying Light 2 does beat Elden Ring in terms of Reddit posts – 8,100,000 compared to 7,380,000 – but the latter has also surpassed the former in Instagram posts, with 356,977 compared to Dying Light 2’s 49,342.

This is according to research conducted by Uswitch. You can find the full results on its website, with Overwatch 2 coming in third place.

Elden Ring’s feat is especially impressive when you remember that, while there have been patches and updates, it hasn’t received any substantial DLC.

It’s safe to say that DLC is in the works, but there’s been no official announcement from FromSoftware or Bandai Namco.

While it did have the advantage of releasing fairly early in the year (which is the primary explanation for Dying Light 2’s high numbers) Elden Ring’s popularity on social media can be chalked up to the very nature of the game.

Its brutal difficulty means players flocked to social media to try and learn tips or strategies on beating certain enemies from their peers, as well as share proof of their success.

That said, Elden Ring has not been without competition in other areas. God Of War Ragnarök, in particular, enjoyed a bigger launch in the UK and is perhaps Elden Ring’s main competition at The Game Awards 2022.

Both titles are going against each other in multiple categories; the big one being Game of the Year. The other nominees are Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and A Plague Tale: Requiem.

Elden Ring is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
