Jennifer Lopez has reflected on her ‘painful’ split from Ben Affleck, two decades before they rekindled their romance.
The lovebirds, dubbed Bennifer, first started dating in the early 00s and soon got engaged – but called off their wedding shortly before they were due to tie the knot.
They reunited last year and basically picked up where they left off, before saying their ‘I dos’ earlier this summer in a low-key Las Vegas ceremony.
Last week, J Lo sent us all into a spin as she confirmed her return to the charts with new album, This Is Me… Now – a follow-up to 2002’s This Is Me… Then, which focused on her love for the Batman actor.
In a new interview, she opened up about getting back into the studio to work on such personal music once more.
‘That album, This Is Me… Then, really captured a time where I fell in love with the love of my life. And I just, it’s all right there on the record,’ she said in a new interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, via Deadline. ‘Every single song we wrote, me writing Dear Ben, it was such a special moment in time to have captured.’

However, after they initially called time on their relationship, she explained that she couldn’t bring herself to perform those tracks concerning their time together.
‘I wouldn’t even perform these records. It was so painful after we broke up,’ she continued. ‘Once we called off that wedding 20 years ago, it was the biggest heartbreak of my life, and I honestly felt like I was going to die.
‘So I didn’t make music in that way that I did in 2002 until now… It set me on a spiral for the next 18 years where I just couldn’t get it right. But now, 20 years later, it does have a happy ending. It has the most, would never happen in Hollywood ending.”
Through This Is Me… Now, Jen revealed her hopes that she can encourage others to believe in true love, but admitted that aspects of being so vulnerable in public ‘scare her’.

‘True love does exist and some things do last forever. And that’s real. I want to put that message out to the world,’ she added. ‘That does take a lot of vulnerability, but I couldn’t stop myself. Parts of it scare me and I think parts of it scare Ben too. He’s like, “Do you really want to say all this stuff?” And I’m like, “I don’t know how else to do it, baby.”’
Jen and Ben announced their engagement earlier this year, before taking the plunge in secret during a getaway to Las Vegas – and married for a second time in August, surrounded by their loved ones.
The Hustlers actress later confirmed that she had taken her beau’s name and would be personally known as Mrs Affleck, while keeping her professional moniker.

In a candid interview with Vogue US, she hit back at the criticism from fans who questioned her decision.
‘People are still going to call me Jennifer Lopez. But my legal name will be Mrs Affleck because we’re joined together,’ she said. ‘We’re husband and wife. I’m proud of that. I don’t think that’s a problem.’
‘I’m very much in control of my own life and destiny and feel empowered as a woman and as a person.
‘I can understand that people have their feelings about it, and that’s okay, too. But if you want to know how I feel about it, I just feel like it’s romantic. It still carries tradition and romance to me, and maybe I’m just that kind of girl.’
