Mike Tindall has defended Matt Hancock amid widespread criticism, insisting he left the I’m A Celebrity jungle with ’11 great friends’.

The former health minister and sitting MP placed third in this year’s series, behind Queen of the Jungle Jill Scott and runner-up Owen Warner. Mike came fourth.

After saying he made 11 friends in the jungle, Mike was asked by Ed Balls on Good Morning Britain if he was expecting that he would be talking about Hancock as one of his friends.

‘No, not really. It’s still a bit weird because when he walked in, he was walking in with a lot of preconceptions. I think Baba[tunde Aleshe] straight up was like, “Well we know who’s doing the trials for the next few days,”‘ Mike recalled.

‘And every day we were like, “Well done, well done, full stars, you ready to go again tomorrow?” And we were right for the first six days, I think it was.

‘But what Matt did prove as a campmate is he could win stars, he wasn’t fazed by the trials that he was put up against and when you’re in that environment, you need someone who brings back the food and he did that.’

Hancock’s arrival in the jungle sparked widespread fury, but he ended up making it to the final.

After finally leaving the jungle, he was reunited with his girlfriend Gina Coladangelo.

Speaking to presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly following his exit, Hancock recognised that his stint in camp was ‘controversial’ given he is a serving MP.

‘I know that it was controversial me coming here, I know some people said people in your position shouldn’t put themselves in embarrassing situations,’ he said.

‘But we’re all human and we all put ourselves in it.’

Hancock faced a number of difficult questions, particularly from ITV newsreader Charlene White, over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and how he broke his own social distancing guidelines.

He admitted he was expecting to be grilled by his co-stars but appreciated having ‘grown-up conversations’.

‘Some were really enjoyable and a release because I could say exactly what I thought but some of them got very emotional,’ he told Ant and Dec.

‘I live with those reactions and I feel it bit what I was able to do – one of the things I’m really grateful for – is that we had grown-up conversations. There were discussions, but no aggro.’

I’m A Celebrity is available for catch-up on ITVX.
