Netflix viewers have taken to new Addams Family spin-off series Wednesday, making it one of the most-watched shows of 2022 – and now it’s achieved a major milestone on Rotten Tomatoes.

Supernatural comedy Wednesday is based on the famous characters created by Charles Addams, and is another in a long line of Addams Family TV adaptations.

Reactions to the series – which stars Jenna Ortega, Catherine-Zeta Jones, and Gwendoline Christie – so far have been mixed to positive.

Critics have praised Ortega’s performance as the titular character while criticising the story and other characters that surround her.

However, while Rotten Tomatoes suggests that critical reviews have been mixed, it appears that Netflix viewers can’t get enough.

With a fan score of 88%, it is the highest-rated Addams Family property on the aggregator website since the original TV series from 1964.

There were three further attempts to restart the Addams Family on TV, but the series from 1973, 1992, and 1998 don’t have any reviews on the website.

The five Addams Family films – three live-action, two animated – have all received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike.

The 1991 movie has a fan rating of 66%, while 1993’s Addams Family Values has a fan rating of 63%.

Addams Family Reunion, which was intended to serve as the pilot episode of a planned TV series in 1998, was released straight to video and bombed with critics.

In recent years, two animated Addams Family movies, from the directors of Shrek 2 and Sausage Party, have performed well at the box office but have received mixed reactions.

While 69% of fans said they very much enjoyed the movie, starring Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron, only 45% of critics gave the 2019 animated film a positive review.

Things didn’t get better for the sequel either, which was released in cinemas and on streaming services simultaneously in 2021.

While, again, 69% of fans viewed the film positively, just 28% of critics had a good word to say about it.

Well, viewers seem to be loving the latest offering and it may be down to the breath of fresh air given to the character, with the star of the Netflix series, Ortega revealing that she didn’t ask Christina Ricci – who portrayed the Addams Family daughter in the 1991 adaptation – for advice about how to play Wednesday.

Wednesday is available on Netflix.
