Nicole Kidman startled and delighted onlookers after bidding an eye-watering $100,000 (£83,000) for a hat signed by co-star Hugh Jackman.

The actress, 55, was attending the Broadway Cares/Equality Fights AIDS auction after a Broadway performance of Jackman’s new production The Music Man.

Kidman reportedly caused ‘gasps and cheers’ amongst the crowd who were attending the event, before receiving a standing ovation for her bid.

A video posted to Twitter by Jackman, 54, showed the moment that Kidman won the bid, drawing shock and delight from the absolutely buzzing crowd.

Later in the evening, Kidman was collecting her prize from the stage at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York when she took a moment to pay tribute to the charity.

‘I love you and I love Broadway. And I love what they do at Broadway Cares. But also, what I want to say is that the show was extraordinary. Thank you.’

Upon returning home after the show, Kidman showed the hat off to her 8.7m followers on Instagram, and left another message of thanks to Jackman.

‘Darling Hugh,’ she wrote. ‘To my friend of 30 years. Right back at you, such a generous and gorgeous man, it was a brilliant night at the theatre.’

She continued: ‘It was an honour to be able to donate to Broadway Cares/Equality Fights AIDS. Congratulations to the talented cast.’
