Olly Murs defended his new song before its lyrics came under fire for being ‘misogynistic’ and ‘cruel’.

The former X Factor star was hit with criticism following the release of his single I Hate You When You’re Drunk after fans felt his lyrics were ‘gross’ and ‘sexist’ towards the woman he was singing about.

‘I thought it was a fun song to write as there have been so many times where a friend, family member or loved one has had one too many,’ Olly said of the track, before the backlash.

‘It’s a light-hearted take from the sober person’s point of view. We all know someone!’

Despite supposed intentions, the Dance With Me Tonight flared up a debate on social media over whether the new bop should be taken as a light-hearted tune or something more sinister.

Beginning with a pointed tweet directed at Olly, fellow music industry peer DJ Shaun Keavney took a swipe at the star.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Olly Murs is quite the sad, controlling boyfriend according to the lyrics of his new song, “I Hate You When You’re Drunk”.

‘I look forward to her reply song “I Hate You When You Sing”.’

Underneath the direct message, fans weighed in offering up opinion after opinion on the words that accompanied the pop track.

One wrote: ‘Both me and husband kept looking at eachother in disbelief, almost waiting for the ‘punchline’… I kept saying “this can’t be serious, surely?!”. Bloody awful sexist heap of cr*p ! [sic]’.

Another jumped in with: ‘What a bizarre concept for a song. Horrible!’

‘It’s a seriously terrible song in so many ways’, penned a social media user.

Not all bad, some commented on the potential tongue-in-cheek nature of the song that will feature on Olly’s new Marry Me album.

‘It’s a song get over it,’ one typed followed by similar sentiments of ‘Obviously a tongue-in-cheek song. A bit of fun. People are way too easily offended these days.’

The lyrics in question described the singer’s interaction with a woman who had indulged in a little too much alcohol during a night on the town.

Olly sang: ‘Oh, you’re slurrin’ all your words, there’s make-up on my shirt / You’re dancin’ on the tables, can’t you see / That you look like a mess and you’re singin’ Whitney?’

Further on in the lyrics, the pop star comments that his ‘ears are bleeding’ and remarks ‘Oh, I hate you, hate you, I hate you, hate you when you’re drunk.

‘Why am I the only one that doesn’t laugh?’

The hitmaker seemed unfazed by the controversial track as he settled into an album signing and had fun with fans, penning cheeky messages atop his cover image on the vinyl record.
