Olly Murs’ new single I Hate You When You’re Drunk has come under heavy fire after its release last week.

The track dropped on Friday and while plenty of fans love the catchy tune – which will appear on his upcoming album Marry Me – others have blasted the pop star for what many see as ‘cruel’ and ‘misogynistic’ lyrics.

In the song, the 38-year-old singer can be heard criticising a loved one for getting a bit too drunk on a night out.

He starts by singing: ‘Oh, you’re slurrin’ all your words, there’s make-up on my shirt / You’re dancin’ on the tables, can’t you see / That you look like a mess and you’re singin’ Whitney?’

In the second verse, he says his ‘ears are bleeding’ as he hears a story for the fourth or fifth times, and croons: ‘Oh, I hate you, hate you, I hate you, hate you when you’re drunk.’

Elsewhere, he asks: ‘Why am I the only one that don’t laugh?’

Despite the upbeat nature of the music, people have questioned the track, including DJ Shaun Keaveny, who tweeted: ‘Olly Murs is quite the sad, controlling boyfriend according to the lyrics of his new song, I Hate You When You’re Drunk. I look forward to her reply song I Hate You When You Sing.’

He added: ‘Imagine putting a track like that out into the world, being proud of the sentiment? It’s totally mad.’

Singer Rebecca Taylor, AKA Self Esteem, shared a screenshot of the lyrics and simply said: ‘Presented without comment’.

A fan described the track as ‘an absolute shocker’, branding the lyrics ‘misogynistic’ as they wrote: ‘FYI, the woman referred to in the song sounds like she’d be a good laugh on a night out.’

‘The new @ollymurs [song] is pretty gross,’ wrote another fan, while a third Twitter user said: ‘Feel like the Olly Murs “I hate you when you’re drunk” patriarchal control b/s could really use a response in song from @lilyallen’.

Others defended Olly, and one listener argued: ‘I don’t even think it’s that deep. It’s just a light hearted song about what it’s like to be sober around drunk people. I wouldn’t know because I enjoy going out and getting drunk.’

And another added: ‘I dont think ive stopped playing this since friday (sic)’

Olly, who co-wrote the song, is yet to respond to the backlash but he previously insisted the lyrics could apply to ‘a friend, family member or loved one [who has] had one too many’.

He added before its release: ‘[It’s] a light-hearted take from the sober person’s point of view.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted Olly Murs’ represenatives for comment.
