ITVX’s new drama Litvinenko, starring Doctor Who’s David Tennant, has been causing quite the buzz on social media.

Ever since cast photos dropped, viewers have been eagerly awaiting the premiere of the series that sees the Inside Man actor ‘transform’ into his character.

The series follows the Des star as the titular member of the Russian Federal Security Service, Alexander Litvinenko.

He moved to the UK after defecting from Russian intelligence services and lived in Lincolnshire, where he worked as a writer.

In November 2006, Litvinenko was poisoned, with photos from his hospital bed sending shockwaves around the world. He died shortly afterwards.

What is Litvinenko about?

Litvinenko will follow the 10-year legal fight by Alexander Litvinenko’s wife, Marina Litvinenko, to work to prove the guilt of those who poisoned her husband.

The British public is aware of the circumstances that resulted in the death of Alexander Litvinenko, and will understandably expect the four-part series to focus on the events leading up to that famous photograph.

However, the series will instead begin with the poisoning before the remaining three episodes explore Marina’s attempts to release the names of those responsible for her husband’s death.

Litvinenko will be available to stream on ITVX from December 15. The brand new streaming service was launched to replace the ITV Hub earlier this month.

The trailer for the drama series begins with a police recording of Litvinenko, who states his name and then says he ‘needs to report a murder’.

The murder, in fact, is his own. ‘I wrote a book about Russia and corruption and they want to kill me,’ he says.

Litvinenko then accuses Russian president Vladimir Putin of being the man behind it all, before it’s revealed that Litvinenko might not be the only person who has been poisoned.
