Mario and Luigi are still plumbers from Brooklyn in the new animated movie, as a series of promotional images leak ahead of the new trailer tonight.

Even though we didn’t get to hear much of Chris Pratt’s Mario voice, the first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie seemed to go down pretty well with everyone, and already there’s another one planned for Tuesday night.

The teaser image is a shot of Princess Peach’s throne, but a swathe of promotional artwork has been leaked online that also shows what seems to be the origins of Mario and Luigi, as ordinary Brooklyn plumbers.

Whether that’s something that’s going to be revealed in the new trailer is unclear, but the images clearly show the brothers’ van in Brooklyn, and what seems to be a shot of Pauline in the background.

Super Mario lore has always been fluid, but the idea that Mario and Luigi are ordinary plumbers in the real world was the basis for the 1993 Bob Hoskins movie and the live action segments of the 80s cartoon.

Pauline was the original heroine in Donkey Kong (that wasn’t Peach) and after decades of being ignored was recently reintroduced as the mayor of ‘New Donk City’.

We can’t show the images here for legal reasons, and they’re already being taken down by Nintendo, but one of the street signs in them is for Brooklyn, implying that Mario is from New York City – so it may be that Pauline is an ordinary citizen in the film.

It’s unclear how long the film will spend in New York, but the announcement trailer itself seemed to show Mario appearing in the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time.

Speaking of Pauline, the one character that there’s still no sign of is Donkey Kong, who’s being voiced by Seth Rogen. He, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, are not in the leaked images either, so either they’re not a big part of the film or Nintendo is saving that for later.

The new trailer will debut at 10pm GMT tonight, as part of a special Nintendo Direct. It seems that the focus will be Peachy, voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, although her appearance was already leaked before even these new images.

The film itself is set to debut in early April, so after years of no information, Nintendo suddenly has a lot to reveal in a relatively short space of time.
