Guy Pearce revealed he was ‘quite surprised’ Damian Lewis continued filming A Spy Among Friends following the death of his wife Helen McCrory.
The Peaky Blinders actor died at the age of 52 in April 2021 after a private battle with cancer, with Lewis confirming the death of his ‘beautiful and mighty’ spouse on Twitter.
Lewis, 51, who shot to fame on Homeland with Claire Danes, is starring in the upcoming crime drama A Spy Among Friends, alongside Neighbours actor Guy and Anna Maxwell-Martin.
The six-part thriller series is based on the novel of the same name by author Ben Macintyre, and tells the true story of two spies, Kim Philby (Pearce), who has secretly defected to the Soviet Union and MI5 agent Nicholas Elliott (Lewis).
Pearce, 55, reflected on the series with hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on Wednesday’s instalment of This Morning.
Paying tribute to McCrory, whom Pearce called a ‘wonderful woman’, he went on to say that he was ‘quite surprised’ Lewis continued with the drama as she had ‘recently’ died.

Pearce, however, said that before her death McCrory had urged Lewis: ‘You better do the show.’
The Hurt Locker actor also said he felt McCrory’s ‘essence and soul’ while on set for A Spy Among Friends.

Maxwell-Martin, who plays investigator Lily Thomas in the series, previously spoke about the series and revealed her unlikely source of inspiration.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, she said: ‘I was supposed to be from Durham, so I initially thought of Ant & Dec… I found out a few weeks in that they’re from Newcastle!’

The Line of Duty star confessed to Graham that she doesn’t know what happens in the spy series apart from the scenes in which she appears.
She admitted: ‘What I do is just read my bits, I don’t need to know what is going on in the rest of it because I am not there.’
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
