A new sequel to the scariest video game ever made is promising emergent gameplay and ‘unscripted terror’… as well as a gun.

It’s getting a bit long in the tooth now, but as far as we’re concerned 2010’s Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the scariest video game ever made. Unfortunately, none of its sequels have come close to stealing its crown, but perhaps it’ll be different for the next one.

Amnesia: The Bunker has just been announced for consoles and PC and will be out sometime next year. It casts you as a French soldier during the First World War, who suffers from the titular malady and is being hunted by an ‘otherworldly creature’ in an almost pitch black bunker.

What’s interesting is that, unlike the previous games, he’s armed with a revolver and the game is set in a ‘semi-open world’ that incorporates ‘emergent gameplay and sandbox elements’ with ‘hardly any’ scripted events.

The implication is that much of the game is procedurally generated, similar to a roguelike, but still has plenty of puzzles and obstacles to deal with, all of which change in every playthrough.

It all sounds very encouraging, and the trailer below is certainly pretty spooky, with developer Frictional Games boasting of enhanced lighting effects and their customarily excellent sound design.

The second Amnesia game, A Machine for Pigs, wasn’t developed by Frictional but 2020’s Amnesia: Rebirth was, and we didn’t particularly care for that.

We’re not sure went wrong though as their unrelated sci-fi game SOMA, from 2015, was excellent, so they’re certainly not one-hit wonders.

There’s clearly a lot more to find out about The Bunker though, so we look forward to that and hopefully finding out that the release date is not too far away.
