Helena Bonham Carter channels her inner 80s soap star in the first glimpse of Russell T Davies’ drama Nolly.

The Harry Potter actor, 56, stars as the late Crossroads actor Noele Gordon, who played motel owner Meg Richardson, in the ITVX series, which will land on the streamer in February.

The three-parter will explore the Queen of the Midlands rise to fame and her fall from grace after being axed from the show, which ran from 1964 to 1983, with no warning.

In the first look teaser trailer, The Crown performer wears a very chic 50s shirt dress, complimented by short orange locks, which have been fashioned into a perm.

Noele strides into what could be the Crossroads production office, after having apparently been accosted by hoards of journalists waiting outside, hoping to get their scoop on the firing.

‘Where did they come from?’ a shocked member of team asks before another responds: ‘I don’t know. ‘Have we got security? Do we need them?’

A baffled fellow worker demands: ‘What’s going on?’ before a sombre character chimes in: ‘Ask her’ while glancing at Noele.

After being asked ‘what exactly is happening’, Noele takes a long drag on her cigarette, turns on her heels and says: ‘In ten.’

‘Now remember, you’ve resigned,’ a worker says under his breath and she slides big shades over her eyes.

He continues: ‘This is fine, this was always your plan. You’ve handed in your resignation because you wanted to, the decision to resign is yours and yours alone.’

Opening the door to the braying media waiting outside, Nolly curtly announces: ‘Gentlemen, I have been sacked.’

Helena has previously said how ‘thrilled’ she was to be taking on the part of the iconic star, who died of stomach cancer in 1985.

‘I’m so thrilled to help tell Nolly’s long overdue and largely forgotten story. Russell’s screenplay is a work of brilliance and I hope I’ll do him and Nolly justice. I can’t wait to start.’

Nolly arrives on ITVX in February 2023.
