Sir Cliff Richard thinks he might have the edge in his unexpected chart battle with Stormzy.
The two unlikely rivals are both gunning for the coveted number one spot, and the Mistletoe and Wine singer has joked that his Christmas With Cliff collection is stronger than the grime star’s new record This Is What I Mean.
Reflecting on the seasonal scrap for the top spot, Sir Cliff – who’s no stranger to this situation – told Good Morning Britain: ‘If you wanna sell records, between October and December is the place to do it.
‘So he’s doing it, and I’m doing it, but I have never got through easily. It’s always been competition with someone else, and if you’ve got the better record, then you’ve got it.
‘This is Stormzy’s album, I was looking at this. There are 12 tracks on his album. My album has 13 tracks!’
The artists dropped their latest records on Friday (November 25), and it’s all to play for before this evening’s weekly reveal.

On Wednesday, the sales flash revealed just 600 chart units separated Stormzy at the top and Cliff in second place, so it really could go either way.
Stormzy, real name Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr, is no stranger to securing the summit though, having already done so with debut album Gang Signs & Prayers in 2017 and again with Heavy Is The Head in 2019.
Sir Cliff’s new album is his first release dedicated to the festive season in 19 years, while the collection is set to become his 47th Top 10 solo album, in a recording career that now spans over 60 years.
He’s had seven solo chart toppers to date, including 21 Today (1961), The Young Ones (1961), Summer Holiday (1963), 40 Golden Greats (1977), Love Songs (1981), Private Collection (1988) and The Album (1993), which means Christmas With Cliff would be his first number one in 29 years.
‘This album is not just mine, it belongs to all of us involved in creating it, and I hope that we add a little something special to your Christmas season,’ he recently said of the festive release.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV1.
