Good Morning Britain’s panel struggled to watch back Matt Hancock’s ‘tears’ after he addressed his bizarre 2020 interview.

The former health secretary appeared on the ITV show two years ago, leaving viewers confused and some questioning whether he was faking tears as he spoke about the pandemic.

In his new Pandemic Diaries, Hancock claimed he ‘lost it’ and burst into tears – but watching back the clip, Susanna Reid, Rob Rinder, and the rest of the panel weren’t so convinced.

‘This was odd, this was during our interview on Good Morning Britain back in 2020,’ Susanna explained, before the clip played, while Rob insisted: ‘There were no parts of my body left to cringe with’.

‘I thought he was laughing,’ Susanna explained. ‘At the time, I thought he was laughing. But of course, he was apparently crying. He’s now explained it in his diaries.’

Summing up an excerpt from the diaries, Susanna said that Hancock recalled ‘losing it altogether’ and that he was ‘blubbing away, battling to regain my composure as tears streamed down my face’.

‘No they didn’t,’ The Mirror’s Kevin Maguire weighed in, as Rob struggled to hold in a laugh.

‘You can’t see any,’ The Mail’s Andrew Pierce pointed out.

Kevin went on: ‘He’s a bad actor. He fabricates situations. He’s been told to be emotional so he pretends he’s emotional and I agree, it sounds like he’s trying to suppress a laugh. Maybe he was laughing at us all with that little act.’

Rob went on: ‘Politicians that keep diaries, there are public servants going to work every single day, our nurses, our police officers, all the people we’re talking about, yet a politician – listen, full disclosure, I’ve known Matt many, many years – but the idea that you keep a diary in your back pocket in order to benefit financially from it in the long run so that you can re-curate history to your own advantage, isn’t there something profoundly ropy and odious about that?”

Hancock was health secretary during the height of the pandemic and is still a sitting MP but most recently appeared on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, a move that faced major backlash.

He came third on the show, just behind runner-up Owen Warner, and newly-crowned Queen of the Jungle Jill Scott.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
