I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! star Scarlette Douglas has fired back after trolls questioned why she didn’t publicly reach out to her A Place In The Sun co-presenter Jonnie Irwin following his terminal cancer diagnosis.
Jonnie, 49, recently revealed that he had been given ‘months to live’ and said he knew his sons would grow up without their dad, after his cancer spread to his brain.
His Channel 4 co-stars were quick to share their love and support, but Scarlette, 35, didn’t know about the extent of her colleague’s illness until she left the jungle.
During Monday’s Lorraine, the ITV host asked how she felt about people attacking Scarlette for not sharing her ‘good wishes’ to Jonnie online.
‘This world now is now based on social media,’ she began.
‘For me, what was more important was to message him directly and to let him know that I’m thinking of him. If there’s anything you need I’m here.’

She continued: ‘I don’t need to put that out everywhere, I don’t have to tweet about it and put an Instagram out about it because it’s personal.
‘It’s more private and for me, that was the best way for me to deal with it.’
The TV personality also hailed Jonnie a ‘good friend’ and ‘the one she looked up to’ during the early stages of her career.
She added: ‘I remember I watched all of his episodes and was like “right I’ve got to do this like Jonnie,” because I just loved how he came across on the show.

‘He was assertive, he was confident, the house-hunters wanted something that didn’t fit his budget he was realistic. He would tell them “no that’s not going to work,” and I loved how good he was on that show.
‘I really watched a lot of his episodes and so coming out [I’m A Celebrity] and hearing what I heard… it was really hard.’
After sharing the news of his diagnosis, Jonnie said in a recent interview that he’s received ‘messages from people all over the world, wishing me well’.

‘Thousands of people have left me heart-warming comments on Instagram and I promise I will try to read them all,’ he told The Sun, boasting 131,000 followers on the social media platform.
‘They range from practical, scientific advice to ones from very religious people. There are thousands and thousands of them on my social media platforms and it’s been great.’
Jonnie shares three children with his wife Jessica Holmes – three-year-old son Rex and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac.
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
