Stephen Fry slammed channels like GB News for promoting free speech that is ‘negotiable’ and said he wanted to visit the station to prove their ideology wrong.
The broadcaster and writer shared his opinions on free speech and questioned whether people like Piers Morgan – who presents his own show on TalkTV- should be allowed to say whatever they wanted.
He broke down his thoughts amid worries Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter would encourage an influx of hate speech and shared that networks adopting a no barriers attitude towards broadcasting were contributing to the problem.
The Blackadder star explained an unlimited amount of unfiltered chat should not be the ‘end point’ and urged that everyone find a way to work towards ‘human beings living together in peace and harmony and happiness as much as possible.’
Speaking with entrepreneur Steven Barlett on his podcast The Diary of a CEO, he said: ‘Do you know what I’ve wanted to do?
‘Go on one of those… doesn’t Piers Morgan do one of those channels like GB News? I’ve sort of wanted to go on there – you’ll have to hold your ears now – and say “How are you, you old c**t?

‘F***king great to see you, c***ty, c**t, c**t” and for him to go “you can’t say that” and I would say “Oh, I thought this was the f**king home of c**ting free speech, isn’t it?”
‘But it isn’t. Oh so it’s like free speech is negotiable so there are bits that you can’t say and bits that you can because that’s the point.’
The TV star continued explaining his stance on the issue: ‘Free speech is of course important but it’s not the end point.

‘The end point is human beings living together in peace and harmony and happiness as much as possible.
‘But for some people, free speech has become the end point, “I want to live in a society where people can say anything” – I don’t think that’s quite what all the original thinkers who wrote on liberty and free speech meant.’
His comments came after he stood by JK Rowling after she faced backlash for a string of transphobic remarks despite his intersex friends being ‘deeply upset’ by her actions.
