If you’re dreading another three hour show, this year’s The Game Awards is confirmed to be much shorter than previous years.

We’re just four days away from The Game Awards and while there have been debates about which game should win Game of the Year, the real main attraction of the event will be the new announcements and reveals.

There’s already a handful of titles expected to make an appearance, be they already known ones like Final Fantasy 16 or entirely games like whatever 505 Games is teasing.

However, host and organiser Geoff Keighley has admitted that there won’t be as many games present compared to previous years, on account of this year’s show being shorter.

Keighley didn’t say precisely how long the show will run for, only that it will be ‘significantly shorter’ and ‘more streamlined.’

This has been done in response to community feedback, with Keighley acknowledging that previous shows went on for too long.

‘One thing we’re doing this year is we’re trying to make the show a little bit shorter,’ he explained in a Twitter audio stream.

‘We think it’s going to be a significantly shorter show this year than in past years, and we’re doing that just because we think that there’s been a little bit of fatigue about, you know, how long the show has been.’

On one hand, it’s nice to hear that this year’s show won’t be as bloated. 2021’s show ran for well over three hours, which was especially tough for us UK viewers, since it didn’t even start until 1am in the morning.

This does mean, though, that there’s less time for game announcements, as Keighley has explained that some things had to be cut.

‘There are a lot of games that want to be a part of it, but we’re kind of cutting back on some of those elements,’ he said.

He later added that there will be ‘fewer bigger games,’ but insisted that there will still be plenty for viewers to get excited about, including games he’s known about for years.

In a separate Reddit AMA, he estimated about 30 to 40 games will be featured during the show, with a ‘fair number’ of them being brand new announcements.

‘I’m pretty excited. This year feels good,’ he said in response to one question. ‘We have thousands of fans back with us, a really strong line-up of announcements and content, and a good show overall.

‘So I am very excited. If everything holds and we can keep some surprises, it’s going to be a very fun night! Haven’t felt this good about a show in a while.’

When another fan asked how many of these trailers will just consist of cinematic footage and not show gameplay, Keighley answered that there aren’t many of those this year and a lot of actual gameplay will be featured.

One thing that will be the same as last year is that UK viewers will need to stay up late to watch the whole thing.

The Game Awards is scheduled to air this Friday on December 9 from 12.30am GMT, although it’s currently unclear if that start time includes the 30 minute pre-show or not.
