Queen fans can rejoice as We Will Rock You is set for a grand return to the West End next year, and perhaps no one is more excited than Brian May.

The iconic musical debuted on London’s West End in 2002 and ran for 12 years, showcasing a host of Queen’s hit songs, before hanging up the microphone.

Well, good news for those who missed the bonanza as it will be back next summer for a 12-week run at the London Coliseum, where the rock band’s late frontman Freddie Mercury performed with the Royal Ballet in 1979.

Reacting to the news, guitarist Brian said: ‘I’m thrilled we finally have this opportunity to put We Will Rock You back on stage in London, where it was born.

‘The show’s original message of the fight to re-establish individuality in a dystopian corporate world is even more relevant now than when we began.’

The 75-year-old added: ‘It will be a completely new production that will burst on to the prestigious London Coliseum stage – but the story, the humour, and of course the Queen music, will hit you harder than ever. We WILL Rock You – again!’

Queen drummer Roger Taylor Taylor, 73, said simply: ‘Bigger, better, faster, funnier. Here we go again… yeaaaaaaaah!’

Comedian and screenwriter Ben Elton, who wrote the original script, returns to direct the show promised big things from the next leg, and said: ‘I hope somebody’s squared this with English Heritage because the fabulous London Coliseum is a Grade II listed theatre and We Will Rock You is gonna blow the roof off.’

We Will Rock You made its arrival on the West End at the Dominion Theatre 21 years ago, and was watched by six million people over 4,600 performances.

The musical is based on songs from Queen’s extensive catalogue but is set 300 years in the future, following rock rebels fighting against an all-powerful company to gain freedom, individuality and the rebirth of the age of rock.
