All Elite Wrestling boss Tony Khan has confirmed William Regal requested his release so he could return to WWE in 2023 to work with his son.
The British wrestling legend’s son can be seen on the company’s NXT brand as Charlie Dempsey, and he called the AEW chief to ask to be let out of his contract at the end of the year.
Under the conditions of his release, once he’s free to re-sign with WWE at the beginning of January he will only be eligible to work backstage for the first year.
From that point – once his AEW contract would have ended, had they activated his extension – he’ll be permitted to work on television again, if he wanted to.
Between September and October, Tony’s mother had suffered two strokes, and he explained how taking Regal’s call from outside the hospital played a part in his response to the request.
Speaking on a media call before this week’s Ring of Honor: Final Battle show, he said: ‘He really had good intentions for why he wanted to go back, and it made a lot of sense to me why he would want to work his son and be with his son.

‘He said to me, and it made sense, “Given where you’re sitting right now, does it make sense to you why I would want to go back and be with my son?”
‘At that point, where I was sitting, it really did make a lot of sense and the last thing I wanted to do in that moment was prevent any parent and any child from being together.’
Tony’s respectful outlook echoes comments made by Saraya following the news, who admitted the AEW roster all want what’s best for Regal.
She exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘We’re happy for him! Whether he’s going there or whatever, it doesn’t matter. We’re just happy with whatever he wants to do with his life.
‘He’s at the age where he can do whatever he wants to without the internet deep diving into it, or everyone saying this, that and the other about him. Who cares? Let him be happy!’
