CD Projekt has managed to talk another major celebrity into being in Cyberpunk 2077, with Idris Elba heading up the new DLC.
Given what a PR disaster Cyberpunk 2077 was at launch it’s honestly surprising that Keanu Reeves agreed to return for the upcoming DLC Phantom Liberty.
Perhaps he was contractually obliged but Idris ‘Luther’ Elba isn’t, as he wasn’t in the original game, and yet he’s being added to the DLC in the role of Solomon Reed, a G-Man for the New United States of America.
Elba’s involvement was announced at The Game Awards 2022 and while the new trailer was brief, it all looked like good stuff – with a very convincing likeness of the man himself.
It’s still not clear exactly what the plot is in Phantom Liberty, but it’s described as a ‘spy thriller’ and seems to involve you doing jobs for the government, rather than just random low lives.
You’ll still be playing as player character V, who still has Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand in their head, who doesn’t seem like he wants to be a government stooge.
The expansion is promised to be sizeable, with a brand new area of Night City to explore, but that means it’ll be paid-for DLC, rather than one a free update. It’s also next gen only, on consoles, and will be out sometime in 2023.
Although Phantom Liberty is the only paid-for expansion, CD Projekt has already said they’re working on a sequel to the original, which has had something of a renaissance in recent months, now that it’s been pumped full of patches and updates.
There’s also been a hint of more transmedia projects similar to Netflix anime show Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which was nominated in the Best Adaption category at The Game Awards but lost out to Arcane: League Of Legends.
