Empire star Terrence Howard has announced his desire to retire from acting, saying he would rather ‘applaud’ other up-and-coming actors.
Since making his professional acting debut in the early 1990s, the 53-year-old has gone on to star in films and TV shows including Winnie Mandela, Ray, August Rush, Prisoners, Iron Man and Hustle & Flow, the last of which earned him an Oscar nomination.
In recent years, he’s gained prominence playing Lucious Lyon in Empire, the cunning CEO of a record company who pits his sons against each other while trying to secure the future of the business.
Following the conclusion of the series in 2020, Terrence is set to appear in The Best Man: The Final Chapters, a series that’s due to premiere in the US later this month.
However, he’s insisted that the end is in sight for his acting career, revealing the poignant advice he received from late acting legend Sidney Poitier a decade ago.
‘This is the end for me. This is the end for me. I don’t know if it’s the end for the rest of them,’ he told ET.

‘I retired two years ago, for the most part. I was done… I asked Sidney Poitier 10 years ago does he want to do any more work, and he said, “Why would I spend my last 10 years doing an impersonation of myself?” And that’s what I’ve gotten to.’
The Get Rich or Die Tryin’ actor explained that he’s reached the point ‘where now I’ve given the very best that I have as an actor’.

‘Now I’m enjoying watching other new talent come around, and I don’t want to do an impersonation of myself,’ he stated.
‘Yes, there’s some better actors out there that can do things that I was never able to do,” he said. “So, I want to applaud them, I want to be excited about what they do.’
In 2019, the actor made similar remarks, saying that he was ‘tired of pretending’.
‘I’m done with acting. I’m done pretending,’ he told Extra at the time.
He added that he didn’t have plans to explore philanthropy, but wanted to focus on ‘on bringing the truth to the world’.
Empire is available to purchase on Amazon Prime Video.
