Lewis Capaldi has given the perfect response after backlash over his upcoming headline slots at Reading and Leeds Festival.

The Pointless hitmaker has fired back in his typically sarcastic and humorous style after some fans criticised organisers for the event, which takes place across two sites with the same lineup over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and claimed he went against its rock roots.

Lewis joins five other headliners announced on Friday, with Sam Fender, The Killers, Billie Eilish, Foals and Imagine Dragons also topping the bill.

Blowing off comments from trolls, he first shared a smiley selfie in bed and tweeted: ‘”Reading and leeds is a ROCK festival what the f**k is Lewis capaldi doing there” “Lewis capaldi isn’t festival material”

’F**k ye. Dream come true to be one of the headliners for @OfficialRandL next year, see ye there x (sic)’

Then Lewis, known for his emotional ballads and wicked sense of humour, decided to have a bit more fun at his naysayers’ expense by suggesting he could be what the festival and genre needs.

He quipped: ‘It’s mad I’m gonna save rock and roll when I headline reading and Leeds wtf’

And when a Twitter user claimed ‘this man would literally not have a career if it wasn’t for his average at best attempt of humour’, he had a typically lighthearted retort ready.

‘Don’t give the game away Morgan fs,’ he joked, while plenty of his fans have rushed to his defence after the festival announcement.

One follower tweeted: ‘Reading and Leeds hasn’t been a rock festival in a long time 😂😂 I’m a rock and emo gal and still love your vibe and so I’d be happy with you at any festival!!’

‘You are the king of rock festivals now,’ quipped another fan, while a third supporter said: ‘You deserve all of this Lewis, you are going to have a great time and do an amazing show, I can’t go to the festival, but I’m sure that you are going to be amazing’.

The three-day festivals return to their usual venues – Reading’s Richfield Avenue and Bramham Park in Leeds next summer.
