James McAvoy has announced he’ll be putting the brakes on his acting career in order to prioritise his family.
The X-Men actor is currently promoting BBC series His Dark Materials and has barely taken a break in recent years, with film releases including Split, It Chapter Two, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and the TV series The Sandman.
However, James, 43, is looking at life a little differently now after tying the knot with Lisa Liberati, who he met in 2016 while working on Split.
It’s now reported that the couple are now parents to an ‘infant son’, welcoming a little brother for James’ first child, 12-year-old son Brendan who he shares with ex-wife Anne-Marie Duff.
With his family now grown, James has explained why he’ll be slowing down the film and TV roles in the future.
‘Because I’m old! I put in the work quite a lot and I love it. But I don’t want to live to work,’ the actor told The Observer.

He continued: ‘The industry is great and it’s given me an amazing life. But it survives on the sacrificial nature of performance. The film industry or the TV industry, they’re just using you up.’
James cited the intense work schedule of the industry which can include 18-24 hour days crammed into a short space of time.

‘And you’re like: how is this f*****g legal, man? How is that guy allowed to drive home at the end of the night?’ he wondered, adding: ‘And people die! I’m not saying that’s the whole reason I’ve got a problem with it, but it’s part of it.’
The Bafta-winning actor explained how he doesn’t want to become Bill Murray’s character in the film Lost In Translation, where he’s ‘basically not got a life because he did the movies – and he can’t remember any of the movies. And yet he’s estranged from his wife and kids’.
James then had to figure out whether he wanted to keep ‘trying to climb the ladder’ in acting or simply enjoy the art of it, ‘taking the foot off the pedal’.
He admitted that he’s somewhat lost the ‘momentum’ of accepting roles and will likely stop taking ‘every great job that comes [his] way’.
‘You need to slow down a wee bit,’ he reasoned.
