Lewis Capaldi stopped proceedings at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Barclaycard to offer English supporters his condolences amid their World Cup defeat after fans watched him massage host Roman Kemp backstage.

London’s O2 was set alight by Capital’s annual ball as a star-studded line-up thrilled audiences in ways England’s Three Lions failed to measure up to.

Taking the stage at the same time as the quarter finals of the football competition in Qatar, the likes of Coldplay, Sam Smith and Mimi Webb sang their hearts out to the packed arena.

Ahead of his anticipated slot, notorious joker and hitmaker Lewis, 26, had some fun with Captial’s breakfast show presenter Roman, 29, for a backstage skit that had fans in fits of giggles.

Roman lay on a spa table while the Forget Me singer oiled up and got busy ridding the host of knots in his back.

Leaning over the topless son of Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp, the singer exclaimed: ‘Christmas has come early for me!’

Later on in the programme, the Scotsman took another opportunity to let his funny side loose and decided to offer his comment on the events in the Middle East.

Sharing news of England’s 2-1 loss to France in the World Cup he said: ‘It’s a sad day, England are out of the World Cup, it’s tough, it’s tough!

‘I’m going to try and lighten it here because I’m Scottish.

‘Don’t boo my nationality!’

Also hitting the stage for the ball was Sam Smith who dazzled crowds in a glittering all-in-one ensemble that featured a low neckline and belt to match.

The singer, 30, stole the show as far as wardrobe was concerned and ensured all eyes were on them as they strutted their stuff to the cheers of fans.

Sam was ready to turn heads from the moment they stepped out of the car in an oversized floor-length black coat with fur trimmings on the hemline.

Mimi Webb, 22, thrilled with a set list of smash hits as did former X-Factor contestant and songbird Ella Henderson, 26, and Tom Grennan, 27.

Coldplay rocked the roof off the O2 following the cancellation of their performance the following year due to Covid and brought the house down as the final fixture.

Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Barclaycard paid London’s O2 Arena its annual visit for two days of star-studded sell-out shows.

Taking place on December 10-11, the festive extravaganza is being streamed live on Global Player.
