The surprise reveal of a Bayonetta spin-off at The Game Awards is only the tip of the iceberg for a series Platinum hopes will never end.
For a franchise that has never been particularly successful commercially, it’s a miracle Bayonetta ever got one sequel, let alone two, and yet on Thursday night developer PlatinumGames announced prequel spin-off Bayonetta Origins: Cereza And The Lost Demon.
Considering Bayonetta 3 won Best Action Game it was a good night for Platinum in general, but in a new interview series creator Hideki Kamiya has said, ‘I personally can’t conceive the Bayonetta series ever ending.’
‘I want to make a Bayonetta 4 and Bayonetta 5, and I intend on pitching them to the company. We often talk internally about how we could make nine of them.’
Kamiya was discussing how creators have to make something they’re passionate about and while he’s only been director on the first game, he clearly loves the character and the franchise as a while.
‘They’ll say things like the series is going to end because the creators have no love for it,’ he said of other developers. ‘I want people to know that’s obviously not how it is. I love Bayonetta more than anyone. How could I not love Cereza and all the other characters I’ve fostered for this long?’
‘I have a structure in mind for where the story is going to go far into the future, players are only able to pass judgment on the story that they have at the moment,’ he told IGN Japan.
Anyone that’s got to the end of Bayonetta 3 will know that it works as both a capstone to the series and a possible jumping off point for more.
Kamiya has made it clear before, that the series’ continued existence depends very much on Nintendo’s patronage, but this isn’t the first time he’s implied that he already has plans for Bayonetta 4.
The only problem is that Kamiya is a terrible troll and has announced multiple games in the past, where it’s been unclear if they’re actually real or not. 2D shooter Sol Cresta was but Ōkami 2, according to anything Capcom has ever said, is not.
He seems to be being pretty serious in the interview though, so while no major work has started yet, it appears likely that Bayonetta 4 will happen at some point.
