In the latest and strangest plot twist in the Activision Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft has reportedly offered to put Call Of Duty on PS Plus.
Although it’s still hard to imagine the deal won’t go through eventually, things have not been going Microsoft’s way lately, in terms of its attempts to buy Activision Blizzard, with the US Federal Trade Commission planning to block the acquisition and commissions in the UK and Europe remaining sceptical.
This has led to Microsoft making a series of increasingly panicked announcements, including a complaint that Sony is trying to succeed by ‘making Xbox smaller’.
They have offered numerous concessions to Sony though, including promising to keep Call Of Duty multiformat for 10 years, but now they’ve reportedly gone a step further and said they can put it on PS Plus.
When the whole deal to buy Activision Blizzard was first announced the natural assumption was that it was so Microsoft could make Call Of Duty, and other franchises, Xbox console exclusives, since that’s usually the primary reason any game company buys another.
Call Of Duty is so important in the industry (Modern Warfare 2 was recently confirmed as the best-selling game of the year in the US) that many monopoly commissions voiced their concerns, with Microsoft not only offering Sony the 10 year deal but promising not to put all the games on Game Pass.
Having Call Of Duty on Game Pass is almost, if not more, important than making the game an exclusive and yet it’s now suggested that they’ve given that up as well, allowing Sony to put the game on rival subscription service PlayStation Plus.
The offer hasn’t been made public yet, as Bloomberg claims that Sony has not yet decided whether to accept Microsoft’s offer.
If it does that makes it much more likely that the whole deal will go through, meaning that Sony themselves could end up being the ones to ensure the acquisition happens.
